The realisation that insulin injections are going to have to become a part of everyday life can be extremely harrowing for many diabetics. Injection takes time, interrupts daily schedules and is considered unpleasant by many people.
Ossulin is being developed by Puredel Limited, a joint venture between CM&D and US-based Natreon Inc. It uses a delivery system based on a naturally-occurring product, which enables insulin to be taken orally. Early data presented at the Diabetes Technology Meeting in 2009 suggested that Ossulin consistently delivered around 20 percent of the insulin dose into the bloodstream. If proof of principle can be achieved, the product will be out licensed for further development.
